Radiofrequency Ablation Q & A
What is radiofrequency ablation?
Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive treatment available at Advanced Vascular Solutions to close diseased blood vessels.
During the treatment, your provider uses radiofrequency energy to heat and destroy the wall of your problem vein. The heat energy causes the vein to collapse and disappear over time.
Your body then reroutes the blood through healthy veins.
Am I a candidate for radiofrequency ablation?
The team at Advanced Vascular Solutions specializes in treating vascular conditions. They determine if you’re a candidate for radiofrequency ablation after a consultation and ultrasound. They use the minimally invasive treatment to get rid of varicose veins.
Varicose veins are enlarged veins that appear under the surface of your skin. Though they can develop anywhere on your body, they most often affect the legs.
Damage to the one-way valves or walls in your veins allows blood to flow backward and pool. The pooled blood increases pressure on the veins and causes them to enlarge, leading to varicose veins.
Many people consider their varicose veins to be purely a cosmetic issue, but the enlarged, visible veins may be a sign of a circulation problem. The team at Advanced Vascular Solutions recommends treatment for varicose veins that impair blood circulation.
The team at Advanced Vascular Solutions says, “Don’t write off your leg pain due to old age, there’s a solution.”
What happens during radiofrequency ablation?
Radiofrequency ablation is an in-office treatment that the team performs using a local anesthetic. During your session, your provider cleanses your skin with an antiseptic cloth and administers the anesthesia.
Then, your provider inserts a catheter through a small incision in your skin and into your diseased vein. They then apply the radiofrequency energy to close the vein.
The team may treat more than one vein during your session.
What happens after my radiofrequency ablation procedure?
The team sends you home after your radiofrequency ablation treatment. There’s no need for crutches, and you can even drive yourself home.
To support healing and circulation, the team recommends you wear compression stockings for up to a week following radiofrequency ablation. You should notice improvements in your symptoms soon after treatment.
It may take several weeks, however, for the visible veins to disappear. The team schedules follow-up care to monitor your legs and circulation and provide additional treatments as needed.
